Maybe it had come with the wind, but it was on the way back that the first signs showed up. The surface got covered with a thin indeterminate layer; the cracks opened and allowed the heat to rise. A dry sensation was spreading, and the sweet smell that was creeping in was numbing. It recalled everything that had gone before.
